Busy Schedule Reflects Active Ministry

Since arriving in America only a month-and-a-half ago, Archbishop Spyridon has set the tone for his active ministry with a hectic schedule of meetings and visits.

In his first week at the Archdiocese, His Eminence received visits from Congressman Lee Hamilton of New York on Sept. 23, and Foreign Minister of Greece Theodoros Pangalos on the 25th.

He traveled to Pittsburgh on Sept. 26 to attend the Pittsburgh Diocese Clergy Laity Conference.

On the 27th, he had a dinner meeting with Consul General of Greece in New York Haralambos Rokanas.

President Glafkos Clerides of Cyprus visited Archdiocese headquarters on Sept. 28. A dinner of the Cyprus Federation of America at a hotel in Manhattan followed that evening.

The Archbishop made a pastoral visit to a church in Manhattan, St. George-St. Demetrios, on Sunday, the 29th.

He began his official October schedule on the 3rd with a press conference for the Greek American media (related story page 3). The same day, he received a visit from the former Foreign Minister of Greece, Michalis Papaconstantinou.

His Eminence met with the governor and vice governor of the National Bank of Greece, and the director of Atlantic Bank on October 4.

The Archbishop made his first visit to St. Basil Academy on the 5th and attended Liturgy at St. Spyridon Church in Manhattan on the 6th.

He was a guest at the Appeal of Conscience Foundation Dinner in New York on Oct.7 honoring the prime minister of Italy.

The next day, he attended the Hellenic Radio Phidippides Award dinner in Manhattan.

On Oct. 10, Olympic gold medal winner John Melisanides visited His Eminence at the Archdiocese.

Archbishop Spyridon attended a dinner of the Hellenic American Chamber of Commerce in New York on Oct. 18.

The weekend of Oct. 19-20, the Archbishop made his first official visit to Holy Cross School of Theology. He returned to his roots in Ohio later in the week for a three-day visit Oct. 24-27, celebrating the Feast of St. Demetrios in Warren and then visiting to Holy Trinity parish in Steubenville.

Rounding out the month, Archbishop Spyridon attended a City Hall reception and gave the invocation at the New York City Council meeting on Oct. 30.
