Fr. Dragas Named Ecumenical Officer

NEW YORK — Archbishop Spyridon has named Rev. Dr. George Dragas, dean of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Mass., as director of Interchurch and Ecumenical Affairs. He will continue to serve as dean, dividing his time between the two positions.

His new responsibilities will include maintaining contacts with other Christian denominations and other faiths, and nurturing relations with other Orthodox jurisdictions in the United States.

Fr. Dragas was named dean of the theological school in December 1994 and assumed his duties at the beginning of the 1995-96 academic year.

Following the resignation of Bishop Methodios as the school's president in October 1995, he was named as interim president, serving until January of this year.

Born in 1944 in Athens, Greece, Dragas received his bachelor of divinity degree from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, his masters of theology from Princeton Theological School and his doctorate from the University of Durham, England.

He was ordained to the priesthood in 1979 by then-Archbishop Methodios of Great Britain and Thyateira. Fr. Dragas served as chief secretary to the Archbishop and as a parish priest in several communities.

He also represented the Ecumenical Patriarchate on several committees of the World Council of Churches.
