Advisory Committee on Religious Freedom Abroad

Secretary Christopher is establishing an Advisory Committee on Religious Freedom Abroad, as part of this Administration's work to promote human rights issues. This is an initiative that President Clinton strongly supports. The White House will issue a statement on this today. The Advisory Committee will be chaired by Assistant Secretary John Shattuck of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor.

The right to religious freedom is affirmed internationally by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This Administration has made a concerted effort to pay more attention to the issue of human rights and the formation of this Committee is one more example of this.
