One year ago, the head of the American archdiocese for Greek Orthodox Christians announced his retirement after 37 years, amid reports of dissension with the sect's leader, Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople. Last week, the 12-member synod of bishops in Istanbul named a new leader for the U.S.: Metropolitan Spyridon, the archbishop of Italy since 1991. Born George Papageorgiou in Warren, Ohio, the 51-year-old prelate is also a computer nerd. He created a diocesan home page on the World Wide Web.
