Remarks of His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon
on the occasion of the presenting of the Greek Independence Day Proclamation by President William Jefferson Clinton
Mr. President,
I take this opportunity, on the occasion of the Feast of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and the 176th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence for the Greek Nation, to thank you for opening the doors of the White House to the Greek-American community. It is with a feeling of joy and thanksgiving that we meet with you, Mr. President, and assure you of the constant prayers of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America for you and your family.
As the patriots of the American and Greek revolutions offered their lives, fortunes and sacred honor for their belief in freedom and democracy, the Greek-American community today stands always ready to serve in every possible way the needs of our blessed country. May the spirits of 1776 and 1821 mingle together to inspire all of us to ever serve our nation with self-sacrifice and dignity.
Again, I thank you, Mr. President, and wish to you and the first family a blessed Easter filled with the grace and peace of the resurrected Lord Jesus.
