Archdiocese Takes Legal Action to Protect Privacy of the Faithful

NEW YORK - The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America announces with great regret that today it has had to take legal action to protect the privacy of the membership families of the Archdiocese and the confidentiality of their mailing addresses. This action has been taken against the organization known as "GOAL," the same organization that, without permission or Archdiocese authorization, used an apparently misappropriated mailing list of the Archdiocese to advance their opinions and to solicit funds from the membership families of the Archdiocese in July of 1998. Although the Archdiocese respects and defends the rights and freedoms of any person to express their opinion, even if such opinion should be prejudicial and noxious, the Church has a fundamental responsibility to its communicants to maintain their confidence and trust, particularly as regards the privacy of their homes. The Archdiocese deeply regrets that is has become necessary to resort to the law courts in order to protect its faithful in this particular regard; however, it hopes that a speedy resolution of this matter and the recovery of the misappropriated property of the Archdiocese will be forthcoming. This legal action is of public record and will in all likelihood be reported in the press. The Archdiocese is issuing this statement in the interest of clarity and responsibility to the plenitude of the Church.
