MAYOR GIULIANI DELIVERS PROCLAMATION
DECLARING SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 1ST, 1998
"HELLENIC LETTERS AND ARTS DAY"

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today declared February 1st, 1998 "Hellenic Letters And Arts Day" in New York City. The Mayor delivered the proclamation at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America's 10th anniversary luncheon celebration of Hellenic Letters and Arts. The luncheon was hosted by His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon, and sponsored by the Department of Education of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and the Committee of Hellenic Letters and Arts.

"Today we celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Byzantium and the impact it has had on Western civilization," said Mayor Giuliani. "From the fourth to fifteenth centuries, art, architecture, music and literature flourished under the Byzantine Empire. Thanks to the hard work of His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese and the Committee of Hellenic Letters and Arts, the legacy of Hellenism continues to spread throughout the world.

"In particular, today we recognize the achievements of Irene Papas who has exemplified this legacy throughout her life as an Ambassador of Greek and Byzantine Culture and an internationally acclaimed actress," the Mayor concluded.

The Mayor presented the proclamation to His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon in recognition of the excellent work he has done in raising funds for scholarships for seminarians of the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts.

This year's luncheon honored Irene Papas, an Ambassador of Greek and Byzantine Culture and internationally acclaimed actress, who was presented with The Hellenic Letters and Arts Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Theater and Arts by His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon.
