Greek Orthodox Community Eagerly Awaits Arrival of New Archbishop of America
New York, NY - The arrival of the newly-elected Greek Orthodox Archbishop of America is being eagerly anticipated by the faithful in the United States. His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios is scheduled to arrive on Thursday, September 16th at 4:00 p.m at JFK Airport via Olympic Airlines from Greece.
His Eminence Metropolitan Demetrios of Vresthena was elected to the vacant throne of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America on Friday, August 19th, |following the resignation of His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon on August 18th.
His Grace Bishop George of New Jersey, Archiepiscopal Vicar, has announced that plans for the arrival and Enthronement Ceremonies are proceeding on schedule. His Eminence Metropolitan Maximos, Presiding Hierarch of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, will travel to Athens, Greece to escort Archbishop Demetrios to the United States on September 16th. They will be met at the airport by the Holy Synod of the Archdiocese, members of the clergy, Archdiocesan Council,Ladies Philoptochos, Archons and Greek Orthodox faithful from greater New York.
Upon arrival, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios will read a Statement and then the delegation will proceed to the Archdiocese where a Doxology of Thanksgiving will be offered for the Archbishop at the St. Paul Chapel of the Archdiocese, followed by Reception in his honor.
The Enthronement Ceremony will be held on Saturday, September 18th at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (319 East 74th Street) at 11:00 a.m. with an Enthronement Luncheon to follow at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel beginning at 1:00 p.m. Information on the Enthronement Ceremony and Luncheon are in the process of being mailed to parishes and auxiliary organizations of the Archdiocese.
Representing His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate as Presiding Hierarch will be His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos, former Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America.
His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios will celebrate the Divine Liturgy with the eight Hierarchs of the Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America at Holy Trinity Cathedral on Sunday, September 19th beginning at 9:30 a.m.
