Archbishop Spyridon Convenes Eparchial Synod
NEW YORK - His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, will convene the Most Reverend Members of the Holy Eparchial Synod of the Archdiocese tomorrow morning for their regular meeting in conjunction with the Archdiocesan Council. The main item on the agenda of the Eparchial Synod will be the nominations to fill the vacant Diocesan Sees of New Jersey, Atlanta and Detroit. In fulfillment of the Charter of the Archdiocese, the Eparchial Synod will nominate three candidates for each Diocese. These candidates will be nominated from the list of candidates prepared at their previous meeting on January 26, 1999. The names of the candidates will then be forwarded to the Sacred and Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople for election.
In accordance with the Charter of the Archdiocese, the election of all bishops of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, whether they be the Archbishop, the Diocesan Bishops or Assistant Bishops, is the exclusive right and privilege of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, which is the supreme spiritual, ecclesiastical and canonical authority for the Holy Archdiocese of America. The Charter of 1977 provides for Diocesan Bishops, and the current Members of the Holy Synod, who were honored with elections as Metropolitans of the Ecumenical Throne in November of 1997, remain the presiding bishops of their respective Dioceses. The date of the election of the new Diocesan Hierarchs ( who will be elected to be Bishops) has yet to be announced.
