For most of his three years leading 1.5 million Greek Orthodox Christians in the United States, Archbishop Spyridon battled demands for his ouster. Critics called the Ohio-born cleric a stubborn autocrat who stifled dissent and was steeped too deeply in Old World ways for a flock seeking to move beyond its ethnic roots. Spyridon resisted his enemies, confident of backing from the church's leader, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople. But after five bishops called for his removal, it became clear he had lost the patriarch's support and Spyridon, 54, quit. His replacement is Metropolitan Demetrios Trakatellis of Greece, an ex-Harvard Divinity School professor.
