Dear Father Pappas,
Arch. Demetrios is merely following the policy that has been part of the GOA as far back as I can remember. We have been 'liberal as far back as I can remember. Our leaders have stated that we are a Church of 'love' solely to show how we differ from the 'Western' Churches, and this has been going on as far back as I can remember.
No one should be shocked about Arch. Demetrios' acceptance of a pro-abortion Senator. If you recall, when the Christian coalition was formed over ten years ago in order to reaffirm our beliefs, it consisted of the RC, the Evangelicals and the oddly enough, was supported also by the Orthodox Jews....but where were we?
Well I'll tell you where. Our Church has always been too fearful to assert its Christian doctrines. Yet considering that our Church is purely an ethnic entity, I have always found that strange...After all, where could those that oppose our doctrines go?
The harrassment though, would be to much for any cleric to bear...let's not forget what was done to the last person that showed integrity....Arch. Spyridon.
In Christ's Love,
Vania

Didn't Arch. Spyridon visit with Sen Sarbanes?

Dear Tom:
You are right. I remember reading or seeeing something about Archbishop Spyridon meeting with him, as well. It's routine. But our hierarchs should make the point that meeting with them does not connote agreement with their policies. This is what is not being made clear and leads us all to believe that they do not care.

Dear Tom,
I indirectly know one of the 'big shots that was on the Archdiocesan council. What I and others seem to notice, was that even though he is a liberal democrat, friend of Hillary, etc., at the time of Spyridon's tenure, he became a little less liberal, and a little more devout. The Archbishop definitely had an effect on him, as he had on a few others I know.
It seems that even if certain people's concern for our former Archbishop was political and maybe ethnic oriented, Spyridon did use it for the betterment of their souls. In that sense, he definitely had leadership qualities.
Arch. Demetrios was placed into position by our former Arch. Iakovos and the council expenses are maintained by certain 'elite'. He dare not oppose them and the values they expouse. He was given his position in order to maintain peace at all costs.
In Christ's Love,
Vania

PS - I forgot to mention that the people who became more Christian in their outlook during Arch. Spyridon's tenure, snapped right back to their old selves within two years
