ATHENS.- Ellinika Grammata Publications will soon release The Legacy, an insightful book that focuses on Archbishop Spyridon’s ministry in the Greek Orthodox Church of America and examines the aftermath of Spyridon’s archiepiscopal tenure in a deluxe bilingual edition bearing the signature of his biographer, the writer and journalist Justine Frangouli-Argyris.

The Legacy assesses the works and days of Archbishop Spyridon during his three-year ministry at the helm of the Greek Orthodox Church of America (1996-1999). Reading his addresses, encyclicals and other documents, one is struck by the realistic goals he set in response to the critical challenge of ensuring the survival of Orthodoxy and Hellenism in the vast melting pot that is the United States.

In her latest work, Justine Frangouli-Argyris brings to light Archbishop Spyridon’s efforts regarding the major questions of Orthodoxy, Greek education, and the lobby on Greek national issues as well as the governance of the Archdiocese of America. At the same time, she depicts the protagonists of the crisis in the Church of America and reveals how the realization of Archbishop Spyridon’s great vision for the Greek American community was systematically thwarted.

This documentary book discusses many aspects of the contemporary history of the Archdiocese of America: people in the backrooms of power vying for financial control over the highly prosperous and largest eparchy of the Ecumenical Throne, the phenomena of plutocracy and nepotism in the current administration as well as the clear signs of decline from 1999 onward.
